FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Interim Chair of the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark, Marieke Gow has announced that the organization is embarking on a process of improving governance and operation of the Discovery Geopark located on the Bonavista Peninsula.
The Discovery Aspiring Global Geopark was awarded designation by UNESCO in 2020, underwent a revalidation process in 2023 and is scheduled for a revalidation visit from UNESCO in 2025.
It is one of five members of the Canadian Geopark Network and benefits from work being done, nationally and internationally, to explore, develop and celebrate the links between geological heritage and all other aspects of an area’s natural, cultural and intangible heritages. Like UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Biospheres, UNESCO Geoparks also play a role in promoting and advancing the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The top priority of establishing a new governance structure that meets the current and future needs of the organization is currently underway. “In collaboration with our funding partners the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology, we are embarking on an initiative that builds upon the incredible work that has been done by board members and staff since we started the process of being a Global Geopark in 2017.
We recently completed a Diagnostic Assessment of the organization, carried out by Conach Consulting, that identified a number of areas where we could improve our approaches to governance and operation, and we are moving ahead with an Action Plan developed as part of that process.
Becoming part of the global Geopark network is a rigorous process and our current board and staff are committed to meeting the requirements of UNESCO. We would like to thank the former Chairs of the Geopark – John Norman and Edith Samson – and a myriad of committed Board members for the dedication they have shown in establishing the organization and bringing it to its current level of development.
Marieke Gow – Interim Chair
As we prepare for the next stage of the revalidation process, Discovery Geopark looks forward to strengthening our level of community engagement, enhancing local and provincial Board representation and providing more effective operational guidance to our staff and volunteers.“
