General Accountability:
The Geologist is responsible for ensuring all geological content, research, and interpretive materials reflect current scientific knowledge and align with UNESCO Global Geopark standards. The incumbent will be expected to build and maintain positive relationships with local communities, Indigenous groups, academic institutions, and tourism operators. The position will also assist the Geopark Manager in achieving strategic goals, including UNESCO revalidation, partnership development, and program planning.
Controls:
The position will operate within the frameworks of the UNESCO Global Geopark designation criteria, Geopark strategic plans, and applicable provincial/federal regulations under the oversight of the Geopark Manager and Board of Directors. The Geologist will maintain scientific accuracy and rigor in all public-facing materials and educational programming and will work within defined financial, staffing, and resource constraints for projects, programs, and conservation activities.
Major Challenges of the Position:
The Geologist is expected to conduct fieldwork across rugged and remote terrain in variable weather conditions on the Bonavista Peninsula. Additionally, the Geologist will have to navigate the need to communicate effectively with both scientific and lay audiences, including youth, tourists, and local residents. The position will contribute timely and high-quality documentation for UNESCO periodic review, while ensuring ongoing alignment with Geopark performance expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Geological Research & Conservation
-Conduct field surveys and geological mapping to document and assess significant geosites within the Geopark.
-Monitor and evaluate geological sites for conservation needs and risks (e.g., erosion, human impact).
– Collaborate with universities and research institutions on geological studies related to the Geopark.
– Contribute to the development of geo conservation strategies and management plans.
Education, Outreach & Interpretation
· Lead geology-focused educational programming for schools, universities, and the public.
· Deliver presentations, guided tours, and community workshops.
· Support training for guides, staff, and local stakeholders on geoscientific topics.
· Develop engaging geological content for signage, guidebooks, websites, and mobile apps.
· Train Geopark guides, staff, and local stakeholders in geological interpretation.
· Deliver workshops, lectures, and field excursions for schools, tourists, and community groups.
· Assist in creating educational materials aligned with UNESCO Global Geopark standards.
Conservation & Site Management
· Monitor and assess the condition of geosites for conservation and safety.
· Advise on conservation priorities and assist in developing management plans.
· Report geological risks or degradation to the Geopark Manager and relevant authorities.
Community Engagement & Collaboration
· Engage with local communities to promote the geological significance of the region.
· Collaborate with Indigenous groups, local businesses, educators, and tourism operators.
· Represent the Geopark in national and international forums as needed.
· Support the development of geotourism products, such as guided tours and self-guided trails.
· Work with Indigenous communities and local stakeholders to integrate traditional knowledge with geological storytelling.
· Participate in Geopark events, festivals, and outreach programs to promote geological heritage.
Human Resources (Assist the Geopark Manager to)
· Oversees recruitment, hiring, and training of geoscience project related staff, ensuring they are well-qualified and dedicated to the organization’s mission.
· Promote a positive work environment that supports professional development and high staff morale.
· Participate in other conferences and professional development opportunities, where possible and available.
Contribution to UNESCO Requirements
· Support the Geopark’s periodic revalidation by preparing geological reports and documentation.
· Participate in the development of new geosites and interpretive strategies.
· Assist with partnerships, proposals, and data collection for UNESCO reporting.
· Assist in preparing reports for UNESCO periodic revalidation of the Geopark status.
· Collaborate with national and international Geopark networks to share best practices.
· Support grant applications and funding proposals related to geoscience initiatives
Education and Experience:
Essential: – Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field. – Demonstrated experience in geological fieldwork, research, or interpretation. – Strong communication skills for both scientific and public audiences. – Passion for public education and community outreach.
Preferred: – Master’s degree or higher in a geoscience-related field. – Experience working in protected areas, UNESCO Global Geoparks, or community-led conservation. – Familiarity with Newfoundland and Labrador’s geological history and heritage. – Knowledge of Indigenous geoscientific perspectives and community engagement practices.
Knowledge: · Knowledge of United Nations and UNESCO initiatives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, or the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. · Financial literacy and knowledge of sound governance and management. · Knowledge of the cultural and tourism sectors.
Abilities: · Ability to work independently and collaboratively. · Creative and solutions-oriented, with a hands-on approach. · Comfortable in outdoor and sometimes rugged field conditions. · Fieldwork experience, preferably in Newfoundland and Labrador or similar geological settings. · Background in science communication, interpretation, or education is desirable.
Skills: · Proficient in GIS, geological mapping, and data analysis. · Familiarity with UNESCO Global Geopark criteria and sustainable development principles. · Strong public speaking and community engagement abilities. · Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. · Passion for geotourism, education, and environmental stewardship
Salary Range- $65,000-$75,000
